Explore Grass Lake and Enjoy a Woodsy Treasure

I'm sure Dorothy wasn't thinking about Shoreview when she whispered those memorable words, "There's no place like home!" I was reminded of her words this summer while I was driving through Kansas. Although I don't love Kansas as much as Dorothy did, I see now that her words also speak for Shoreview.

I wasn't much thinking of Shoreview while I was in Kansas. Only when I returned home to the scenic views of so many glistening lakes—Turtle Lake, Snail Lake, Lake Owasso—did I come to appreciate, once again, this place I call home.

Of all the lakes in Shoreview, one of my favorites is in the Grass Lake Nature Preserve. Located just north of Interstate 694 between Victoria Street and Rice Street, Grass Lake is a woodsy marshland with rolling, grassy hills. No boats. No beaches. Serenely quiet. Grass Lake is a natural setting with beautiful sunsets, birds, deer and loads of cattails.

Grass Lake is easily accessible. From the south, use the Interstate 694 pedestrian overpass located east of Victoria Street on county Road E. From the north, enter Grass Lake on the path to the south side of Gramsie Road. Either way, you'll discover a wonderful wooded marshland where you can take a stroll on a groomed path or explore the dirt trails that abound around the marsh.

If you haven't explored Grass Lake, fall is a great time to enjoy its beauty. Grass Lake is one of Shoreview 's natural treasurers. Shoreview has a wonderful network of paths and trails that criss-cross the four corners of the city. You can bike, cruise in your wheelchair or take a leisurely walk with friends.

Be sure to enjoy the beauty of Shoreview this fall, and remember: Often times, "There's no place like home!"
